Job Description

The Position

Organon is seeking an Associate Director, Automation Engineering to lead a high-performing team at the intersection of enterprise infrastructure, cloud platforms, and intelligent automation. This role is an opportunity to shape how Organon builds, operates, and continuously improves the systems that power our digital enterprise.

As both a people leader and a hands-on technical architect, you will manage and develop a team of engineers while driving automation strategy across on-premises and cloud environments. You will serve as the primary steward of Ansible-based automation at Organon, expanding its reach and impact while integrating modern DevOps practices and AI-driven capabilities into the engineering lifecycle.

This is a highly visible role that requires equal parts engineering depth, leadership presence, and strategic vision. The right candidate brings strong infrastructure fundamentals, a passion for automation, and a forward-looking perspective on how AI is transforming cloud and infrastructure operations.

Key Responsibilities

People Leadership & Team Development

• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of automation engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, continuous improvement, and accountability.

• Set clear goals, manage performance, and support career development for direct reports across varying levels of seniority.

• Drive recruiting efforts to attract and retain top automation engineering talent.

• Champion engineering best practices, knowledge sharing, and a strong team culture aligned with Organon’s values.

Infrastructure Automation Engineering

This role is fundamentally an infrastructure automation leadership position. Ansible is Organon’s primary automation platform, and this leader will own its strategy and execution — using it as the primary vehicle to automate infrastructure at scale across both on-premises and cloud environments.

• Own and evolve Organon’s enterprise Ansible practice, including the design and governance of playbooks, roles, collections, and dynamic inventory, ensuring they are scalable, reusable, and maintainable across environments.

• Lead the adoption and expansion of Ansible Automation Platform (AAP), including automation controller, execution environments, and event-driven automation to enable self-service and proactive operations.

• Drive automation of on-premises infrastructure operations — server provisioning and lifecycle, OS configuration and patching, network device management, and storage operations — using Ansible as the primary delivery mechanism.

• Identify and systematically eliminate manual operational toil across the infrastructure estate through well-engineered, auditable automation pipelines that improve reliability and reduce risk.

• Partner with infrastructure operations teams to document, standardize, and automate runbooks and day-2 operational tasks, translating tribal knowledge into durable, version-controlled automation.

• Maintain compliance, security hardening, and governance automation aligned with enterprise security policy and audit requirements, integrating policy-as-code practices into automation workflows.

Cloud Automation & Infrastructure-as-Code

• Design and implement infrastructure-as-code (IaC) solutions using Terraform to standardize and accelerate cloud deployments across AWS, Azure, and GCP.

• Build and optimize CI/CD pipelines and self-service automation tools that improve developer productivity and reduce operational overhead.

• Support FinOps initiatives by automating cloud cost visibility, tagging enforcement, and resource lifecycle management.

• Integrate policy-as-code and automated governance controls in partnership with cloud and cybersecurity teams.

DevOps & Site Reliability Engineering

• Contribute to Organon’s broader DevOps transformation by embedding automation into the software and infrastructure delivery lifecycle.

• Help drive adoption of observability, monitoring, and alerting frameworks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana) and integrate with Ansible and other platforms to provide self-healing capability as part of a broader initiative to embrace site reliability engineering principles.

• Partner with application development, platform engineering, and architecture teams to enable fast, reliable, and automated delivery pipelines.

AI Operations & Infrastructure Intelligence

Over the next two to three years, this function is expected to evolve from infrastructure automation into AI operations platform ownership. This leader will not simply track AI trends — they will define and execute Organon’s infrastructure AI roadmap, building the capabilities that make the enterprise’s AI ambitions operationally viable.

• Own Organon’s infrastructure AI roadmap: define the strategy, set priorities, and lead execution for AI-driven operations capabilities across infrastructure and cloud domains.

• Lead a dedicated charter within Organon’s enterprise agentic AI program, taking accountability for infrastructure and operations use cases from concept through production deployment — not as a contributor to someone else’s program, but as an owner of a defined scope within it.

• Build and operationalize AI-powered capabilities for the infrastructure estate, including autonomous remediation, predictive capacity management, intelligent anomaly detection, and AI-assisted configuration generation.

• Establish the platforms, tooling, and engineering practices required to run AI workloads reliably in production — encompassing model deployment infrastructure, observability, and lifecycle management.

• Partner with data science, commercial technology, and enterprise architecture teams to ensure AI/ML pipelines are supported by robust, automated infrastructure that meets performance, compliance, and scalability requirements.

• Evaluate and adopt emerging AI operations tooling and frameworks, making deliberate build-vs-buy decisions that advance Organon’s long-term AI infrastructure capabilities.

Cross-Functional Stakeholder Engagement

• Partner with architects, product managers, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable technical automation solutions.

• Communicate automation strategy, roadmap, and outcomes clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences including senior leadership.

• Represent the infrastructure automation function in enterprise architecture discussions, planning cycles, and technology governance forums.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.

Experience & Skills

• 8+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, cloud operations, or automation engineering roles.

• 3+ years of direct people management experience, including hiring, performance management, and team development.

• Deep, hands-on expertise with Ansible as a primary automation platform — including playbook development, roles, collections, dynamic inventory, and Ansible Automation Platform (AAP).

• Demonstrated experience automating on-premises infrastructure operations including server lifecycle management, configuration management, OS patching, and network/storage automation.

• Strong proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM, etc.) and CI/CD platforms (Bitbucket Pipelines, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, etc.).

• Hands-on experience with two or more major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) in enterprise environments.

• Solid understanding of cloud-native architectures, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, etc.).

• A clear, well-developed point of view on how AI is transforming infrastructure and cloud operations, with demonstrated experience applying AI or ML capabilities in an infrastructure or operations context.

• Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills with a track record of influencing outcomes across cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the life sciences or regulated healthcare industry.

• Background in regulated environments with focus on security hardening, governance automation, and compliance-as-code.

• Relevant certifications in Red Hat Ansible, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), or DevOps practices.

• Practical exposure to FinOps practices and cloud cost optimization through automation.

• Hands-on experience building or operating AI/ML infrastructure, agentic AI frameworks, or AI operations platforms.
