Job Description
The Position
This Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role is an individual contributor within Medical Affairs who provides scientific and functional leadership to the MSL team. This position does not have line management responsibilities and does not include people management activities such as performance appraisal hiring or compensation decisions.
The role serves as a scientific role model and trusted internal advisor ensuring excellence in non promotional scientific exchange with Scientific Leaders (SLs) and Key Decision Makers (KDMs) s while contributing to Medical Affairs strategy capability development and cross functional collaboration.
Responsibilities
External Scientific Engagement:
Build and maintain high level non promotional peer to peer relationships with SLs and KDMs serving as a scientific counterpart.
Proactively plan and execute frequent and meaningful scientific engagements with priority SLs and KDMs demonstrating strong field activity and ownership of engagement plans.
Lead complex or strategically important scientific discussions including emerging data interpretation unmet medical needs and evidence gaps.
Collect and synthesize advanced insights on disease areas therapeutic landscapes and regional challenges and translate them into strategic recommendations.
Represent Medical Affairs at key scientific meetings congresses and symposia providing leadership in scientific objectives preparation and post event insights generation.
Respond to unsolicited medical scientific pipeline or product related requests particularly in complex high impact situations using approved resources.
Facilitate appropriate connections between SLs or KDMs and internal experts for clinical trials, grants, outcomes research, or real world evidence activities.
Plan chair and participate in advisory boards expert panels hospital lectures and journal clubs acting as lead presenter or facilitator when required.
Provide scientific support related to HTA processes and formulary discussions in accordance with principles of independent scientific exchange.
Team Leadership and Capability Development:
Act as a scientific mentor and coach for less-experienced MSLs supporting development of scientific expertise communication skills and stakeholder engagement quality.
Support onboarding continuous education and best practice sharing across the MSL team without formal people management accountability.
Provide guidance on scientific content stakeholder prioritization and engagement planning to enable consistent high quality field execution.
Serve as a point of reference and escalation for complex scientific questions or challenging external interactions.
Internal Collaboration and Strategic Contribution:
Contribute to the development execution and optimization of the country Medical Affairs Plan with a focus on scientific strategy and field medical excellence.
Collaborate closely with Clinical Development Evidence Generation Market Access and Commercial functions while maintaining Medical Affairs independence.
Support identification and engagement of potential investigators in collaboration with clinical trial teams.
Consolidate and communicate actionable insights from field medical activities to Medical Affairs leadership and global stakeholders.
Deliver advanced disease or on label scientific training to internal stakeholders where appropriate and compliant.
Lead or contribute to cross functional or Medical Affairs projects as assigned.

Sustained high level of SL and KDM engagement demonstrated by both quantity and quality of interactions aligned with Medical Affairs priorities.
Well balanced achievement of engagement activity levels and depth of scientific discussion across designated priority stakeholders.
Consistent positive qualitative feedback from SLs internal stakeholders and Medical Affairs leadership on scientific credibility and contribution.
Demonstrated improvement in MSL team scientific engagement quality and capability over time.
Actionable field insights that clearly inform Medical Affairs strategy evidence generation or lifecycle planning.
Successful design execution and outcomes of advisory boards scientific meetings and key engagement activities.
Strong cross functional collaboration resulting in aligned scientific strategies and execution.
Compliance with all applicable laws regulations and internal codes without deviation.
Required Education, Experience and Skills
Master’s degree in Pharmacy or a relevant scientific discipline. PhD degree preferred.
Minimum 7 years of experience as an MSL in the pharmaceutical biotechnology or related industry.
Demonstrated experience in a project leadership role or peer leadership capacity without direct line management responsibility.
Previous experience as an MSL manager is an advantage but not required.
Experience or strong interest in Women’s Health therapeutic areas is highly desirable.
Proven track record of high quality scientific exchange and contribution to evidence generation initiatives.
Fluency in English with strong verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal listening and influencing skills.
Candidate Profile Summary
This position is intended for an experienced MSL who values a strong hands on presence in the field while balancing deep scientific expertise with a high level of execution. We are seeking an individual who can independently and consistently conduct a substantial number of high quality scientific engagements with Key Opinion Leaders, while building trusted long term relationships grounded in a deep understanding of medical and clinical needs.
Although this role is not a line management position, the successful candidate is expected to act as a scientific role model for the MSL team, using their experience and judgment to support, inspire, and elevate colleagues. A high degree of autonomy is essential. This role suits individuals who proactively identify opportunities, take ownership of complex scientific topics, and translate field insights into meaningful contributions for the organization.
An understanding of the Japanese medical and academic environment, combined with the ability to engage from a global Medical Affairs perspective, is highly valued. This role is well suited for professionals who are motivated to demonstrate the value of Medical Affairs through field driven scientific excellence and collaboration across the organization.
