Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that supports the independently incorporated Planned Parenthood affiliates, which operate non-profit health centers across the U.S. PPFA also works to educate the public on and advocate for issues of sexual and reproductive health. Formed as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund is a separate non-profit membership organization tax-exempt under section 501(c)(4). The Action Fund engages in educational, advocacy, and limited electoral activity, including grassroots organizing, legislative advocacy, and voter education in furtherance of the Planned Parenthood mission.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Planned Parenthood Action Fund seek a dynamic and seasoned speechwriter and communications leader to fill the role of Senior Presidential Writer. This job reports to the National Director, Federation & Internal Communications in the department of Federation Affairs in the Office of the President. The Office of the President communicates with clarity and purpose to develop stakeholder capabilities and model the culture needed to achieve the organization’s goals, vision, and mission.

Purpose:

  • The Senior Presidential Writer serves as the strategic architect and guardian of the President & CEO’s voice. They will partner directly with the President, Deputy Chief of Staff and senior leaders within the Office of the President to create compelling original content that consistently conveys the organization’s strategic narrative and key messages to internal and external stakeholders. As a trusted advisor and speechwriter, the Senior Director exercises exceptional judgment, discretion, and political acumen to ensure the President’s communications resonate with diverse stakeholders — from affiliate leaders and national boards to donors, policymakers, and the public.

Delivery:

  • Develop and execute the President’s messaging strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and consistency across internal and external platforms.
  • Creates speeches, remarks, talking points, memos, video scripts, and other high-profile communications from the President & CEO of PPFA and the Action Fund, and the Office of the President, adapting the tone and voice for varied audiences
  • Manages team requests and assignments via Asana or other project management tool and editorial calendars
  • Monitors news, trends, and political dynamics that can be used to proactively shape content and provide rapid-response communications under tight deadlines
  • Travel with the President & CEO to observe key speaking engagements, including national convening, board meetings, congressional testimony, and media-sensitive appearances; ensure messaging is delivered with precision and impact; and advise, adapt, and improve future communications based on feedback
  • Tracks and evaluates data and feedback about communications to inform content and process improvements per OKRs / KPIs for optimal federation communications

Engagement:

  • Advise and partner directly with the President & CEO, ensuring their public and internal communications reflect organizational strategy and inspire trust across the federation
  • Collaborates with Deputy Chief of Staff, President’s Communications Director, Office of the President departments, External Affairs, and national office leaders, and external stakeholders on messaging, tone of voice, communications requests and deliverables, and engages in ongoing bidirectional feedback
  • Independently and consistently communicates project/request status and co-creates Federation Communications team workflows and Office of the President team processes to ensure coordination, clarity in expectations, and timely completion
  • Receives assignments from Director, Federation Communications, Director, Internal Communications, and National Director, Federation Communications, and assigns work to Manager, Presidential Communications
  • Builds deep and lasting relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the President & CEO’s voice strengthens organizational credibility and advances mission-critical objectives
  • Empowers staff to deliver assigned responsibilities and manage their functions

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

  • 12 years of speechwriting experience for high profile organizational leaders (e.g., president, CEO, executive director) or elected officials with a national profile, varied internal and external stakeholders/constituents/partners, and a demanding, rapidly changing schedule, while providing thought partnership
  • Proven track record of shaping a leader’s voice and narrative at the national level, with demonstrated impact in high-stakes environments
  • Flexibility to travel and occasionally work outside regular business hours (early mornings, nights, and weekends)
  • Previous management experience seeing to direct reports’ growth and success
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, learn and process information quickly, and handle sensitive and confidential information with good judgment, as well as rapid-response scenarios calmly under pressure
  • Proven track record of ability to complete projects according to outlined scope, budget, and timeline with the ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects in a highly matrixed environment
  • Deep fluency in and strong, inherent ability to consume and digest news, especially related to sexual and reproductive health and rights, politics, legal proceedings, and other related topics, with a keen sensibility for how to apply it to their writing
  • Excellent ability to conceive, draft, proofread, and edit written materials quickly, including demonstrated ability to be creative, tell a story, understand and communicate about complex, technical, or sensitive subjects in a clear, concise, and engaging manner, as well as fact check and research with due diligence
  • Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with a dynamic, fast-moving team, completing multiple tasks with poise, accuracy, and confidence.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills; excellent with details, following up and following through to completion
  • High proficiency in Google products
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to quickly changing priorities and ambiguous situations

Travel: 25% domestic travel
