About Vira Health

Vira is a London-based digital health company focused on closing the gender data gap in healthcare, starting with better menopause care. Female health has been historically under-resourced and overlooked and the results are staggering. Women are 2 times more likely to die of a heart attack. They have a 1.7 times higher risk of having an adverse drug reaction. Across brain cancer, chronic pain, endometriosis and dementia there is evidence of misdiagnosis of women. Scary? Infuriating? Time for a change? We think so.

Overview of the role

Menopause is a complicated topic and a big part of what we are doing at Vira is making that easier to understand. To help us do that, we are looking to bring on a freelance writer to help with our increasing need for high-quality content.

The role requires an individual with experience distilling complex scientific and health topics into useful and actionable writing. You should also be creative, skeptical and excited to get exposure to all the different aspects of an early-stage HealthTech start-up.

Reporting directly to our Head of Tone and Content, the ideal candidate will have published on topics related to women's health in the popular press.

Responsibilities include:

  • Writing: write new, high quality, evidence-based, consumer friendly guides, blogs, articles and snippets for the Vira Health website, social media and mobile app. The writing will be varied across all aspects of menopause (nutrition, sleep, stress, exercise, mental health). All articles are on the topic of menopause - some will focus on the more medical side of menopause whereas others will use a lifestyle approach.
  • Quick turnarounds: We work under tight deadlines, but never at the expense of the content for our users. As part of the process, there will be a peer review and final edit before publishing.
  • Style: We work collaboratively and all our content is written to a style guide and reviewed with our content lead. You should be happy to receive feedback and work in this manner.
  • Design: When appropriate, work side-by-side with designers to ensure the content comes alive through images, diagrams or infographics.

Desired experience:

  • NCJT (National Council for the Training of Journalists) accreditation or an equivalent degree/experience
  • You’ve written for consumer or scientific publications in the past and are used to tight deadlines and writing in a variety of formats and styles.
  • You have a personal interest in women’s health and find it puzzling how bad the coverage is.

Compensation

You will be paid on a per article basis

Flexible Working

A diverse team means diverse working styles and circumstances, so flexibility is always really important to us. Covid-19 has obviously made this even more important. We are committed to adapting how we work to fit a variety of new and existing needs.

This is not a full time or permanent position. It will be based on our content requirements and your availability to hit the deadlines required.
